thanks again! Folder 1 contains your start menu icons. Those are back, but still have startup programs in several locations including Microsoft Office, Games, and many other's.

Judy Reply hateadub permalink It sounds like the update issue related to their being a virus on the pc still. What is the small metal squares attached with the wheel tire? I somehow picked up a virus that hid all my programme files, my desktop files, and basically made itself as difficult as possible for me to get rid of it. If it's another registry setting I have been able to identify it.

I cannot open all of the left menu items of the Start menu except Google and All programs such as Microsoft Office, I need to find the .exe in the directory Select it and copy. 1.5 The old programs folder may not be in the above location, that's just where i found mine.

Reply Harper Ward permalink I would like to say as well all my app data (username\appdata) was "hidden" after this virus. I ran unhide like three times after it first happened, but it just didn't work. I just now saw your post.I'm glad we were able to point you in the right direction. Similarly, the shortcuts within the Start Menu and on the desktop are also missing when I log into my other user account on my PC.

The drawback of running unhide.exe is, it unhides ALL files even windows system files with default hidden attributes. Make sure to clean the virus first. How is it possible for other animals to have better night vision than humans, who can detect individual photons? For Windows 7 users, the all users start menu is C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and the all users desktop folder is C:\Users\Public\Desktop Hope this helps ! Reply hateadub permalink Awesome. Most cleanup/virus scanners these days will empty the temp folders but only selected scanners are updated to check for smtmp folders. It was masquerading under a fake Windows Security type pop-up that warned me my (C:) drive was imminently about to die, and that it needed to be fixed urgently.

I've confirmed that this behavior is present regardless of the profile so I can't just delete the user's profile and recreate it. Inside the 4 folder are the desktop items that should be copied to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop. Reply Ric permalink Worked for me too. Ok I got it now.
